Presidents Cup: No morning stroll for USA…

Saturday sees two sessions of golf/slaughter as the outgunned visitors face the dominant hosts in four morning foursomes before four afternoon fourballs.

A Phil Michelson missed 6 footer denied us an 11/2 win on a first day 4-1 scoreline, and Lefty well and truly disappeared from the Lap of the Odds Christmas card when draining a 15 footer on the last yesterday to deny us a 6/1 payout on 4-1 for day 2.

The reduction to four matches certainly helps reduce the International team’s exposure to their lack of depth.

The opening Spieth/Reed vs Day/Leishman could be a close fight, whilst Adam Hadwin’s fine form yesterday could help his teammate Adam Scott get competitive in match 2.  Mickelson may be going down the last again in match 3, and even the powerful Fowler/Thomas combo will have  a tough fight against foursomes specialists Grace and Oosthuizen.

So the one way trafffic may not flow as fast this morning.  The US team still looks too strong but this should be closer.

The betting suggests a 3-1 home win or even 2-2 are favoured both at 11/4.  But with all the matches being arguably closely matched, the chance of a half somewhere seems high, and splitting the difference with a 2.5-1.5 home win is richly rewarded at 9/2 as the bookies tend to field against foursome ties.

Recommendation: Day 3 Foursomes correct score: USA 2.5 International 1.5,  9/2 Paddy Power
