World Cup Qualifier: Let’s get ready to rumble…

This one is big.

Wales hosts the Republic of Ireland with qualification for the World Cup in Russia next year on the line, for both sides.

Tonight’s winner will finish at least second in Group D, securing a qualifying play-off place. But automatic qualification is also a possibility if group leader Serbia was to slip up at home to Georgia.

A draw would be enough for Wales to finish second in the group, but wouldn’t guarantee a play-off berth.

This game is sure to be fiercely contested, with everything on the line, and that’s before you throw in any lingering bad feelings about the tackle that broke Ireland captain Seamus Coleman’s leg when the teams last met.

Wales start the game as slight favourites, and we at Lap of the Odds HQ would tend to agree, but given the likely competitive nature of the game we would prefer to play it via the bookings route.

Both teams to receive a red card is around 25/1, and that does hold some appeal, but we will take the SkyBet offer of 3/1 that both teams receive at least 30 booking points. That’s 10 points for a yellow and 25 for a red, for the unaware.

Recommendation: Both teams to receive at least 30 booking points, 1 pt, at 3/1, SkyBet
