Wednesday Races: A Big day for Phil?

A good friend of ours, Phil, is a long time horse owner and historically a somewhat unlucky one.

To be fair to Phil though, he is a better judge of human talent, and his luck has been on the turn since being a very early convert to the excellent Harry Whittington.

Harry’s eye for a horse and training skills have given rise to some long awaited success, and now the battle is to win at the higher levels of jump racing.

We have a debutant upcoming with Harry , more on that tomorrow, but before then it’ll be squeaky bum time for Phil as his finest horse to date, Bigmatre, makes his debut over fences at Ludlow (1600 BST).

A wayward and gangly sort as a youngster in France, he would have been overlooked by lesser judges, but Harry saw potential, and two seasons of hurdling has seen some good efforts and three wins.

Fences though have always looked likely to be BigM’s scene, he is tall, rangy and should inprove for the bigger obstacles.

Harry’s yard is in fine form, the horse has wins on both seasonal debuts and his best form on flat sharper tracks, BigM looks likely to be the latest from Hill Barn Stables to add to the early season success story.

We’ll be backing Bigmatre, Phil and Harry in what we hope will be a memorable week.

Recommendation: Bigmatre, (1600 Ludlow), 1pt win, 5/2 Betfair sportsbook
