Champions League: Tough ties for English clubs

The Champions League continues tonight, with Manchester United traveling to Portugal to take on Benfica and Chelsea hosting Roma.

United travel as leaders of Group A after winning both of their opening games, but manager Jose Mourinho has been bemoaning the lack of options in his squad given injury problems.

This tends to suggest he will play in a defensive manner, reasoning that an away draw should maintain his side’s strong position ahead of a home tie. United will still have talented players up front, but chances may be at a premium.

We take United to win to nil, after putting in a Mourinho defensive masterclass.

Chelsea also have a tricky tie, hosting a Roma side which has won four out of their last five Serie A games.

The Blues offered up one of the performances of the last Champions League round, beating Atletico Madrid in Spain. They have followed that with successive Premier League defeats, but could now welcome back to striker Alvaro Morata.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has warned about the danger these losses could have on their title defence, but the players look like they have already decided to prioritise Europe.

We take Chelsea to edge a tight game, with both teams likely scoring.

Recommendations:

Man United to win to nil, 1 pt, at 15/8, Paddy Power

Chelsea to win with both teams scoring, 1 pt, at 9/5, Paddy Power

And 1 pt on the double at approximately 7/1.
