Friday Races: Mick’s the trick…

We were narrowly beaten at Newcastle yesterday, but we will be staying at the Tyneside Churchill Downs for today’s pick.

Mick Easterby is the archetypal northern trainer.  What nowadays is classed as a “colourful character” capable of using “colourful language”, straight talking Mick is still a wily veteran.

We backed his 3yo gelding Knightsbridge Liam back in March only for the steering to go amiss round the bends at Wolverhampton.

He had a break afterwards and although a good second at Beverley in August, it was the return to artificial surfaces that promised much in a strong finishing 4th here last time.

He really showed his suitability to this surface that day, and although it may not have been much of a race, Liam clearly hinted at improvement to come.

Useful apprentice David Egan can take the ride and bring his mark down to just 52, and that should give him the few pounds in hand in need to beat his rivals here.

Recommendation :  Knightsbridge Liam (1740 Newcastle), 1pt win, 13/2 generally available
