Thursday sees the start of the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament, played at the Sheshan Golf Club in Shanghai.
This event has the highest prize money in East Asia and has attracted a stellar field, including defending champion Hideki Matsuyama.
As well as Matsuyama, winners over the last four years have included Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson. This suggests to us at Lap of the Odds that length off the tee is an important factor. With this in mind, and given he has won around this course in the recent past, we are going to side with DJ. True he’s the favourite, but 9/1 is more than we were prepared to take at the Masters and this field is not as deep. This looks excellent value.
Our second selection is Bernd Wiesberger. The big Austrian has gone off the boil after a very successful 2016, but he did win the Shenzhen International in April (played on a different course) and certainly can hit his drive a mile. A break may well have freshen him up, and we’ll take the 80/1 now on offer.
Johnson to win, 2 pts, at 9/1, BetFred
Wiesberger 0.5 pts each way at 80/1, 1/5 the odds for first six, William Hill/SkyBet
