Nice to see a good Newmarket card rescue us from the prospect of a Sedgefield punt.
These late season headquarters cards are often a chance to run countless 2yo maiden races to give all the local trainers a chance to blood their late developing types. Fascinating stuff for those with eyes for next year’s classics, but fraught with danger for those looking to punt.
At least the nursery (1420 BST) demands that participants have some form in the book. These races can often go to those who have shown little in maidens, of which Bertog catches the eye here.
That theory certainly worked at Kempton recently when Letsbe Avenue made his nursery debut after three minor maiden efforts.
Given a mark of just 63, he showed huge improvement to launch a sustained run that saw him prevail in a battle with the runner-up, the two pulling miles clear of the field,
He has been put up a crunching 10lbs, but the runner-up was arguably unlucky to suffer the same fate in a big field off an 8lb higher mark next time, so Letsbe may yet have more in the locker.
The booking of genius Ryan Moore is in itself worth nearly the full 10lbs and even though there are plenty of unexposed types, this horse has at least proven he can progress from maiden company and he looks a decent price here.
Recommendation: Letsbe Avenue, (1420 Newmarket), 1pt win, 13/2 generally available.
