The PGA Tour heads to the desert this week, with the TPC at Summerlin near Las Vegas hosting the Shriners Open.
The thin air in the desert tends to favor the long hitters, but recent winners have been quite diverse as players, including defending champion Rod Pampling, Smylie Kaufman, Ben Martin and Webb Simpson.
Our first selection is a local boy. Charley Hoffman lives in Vegas and has recorded three top-six finishes at this event. He has been playing well enough this season to make the Presidents Cup, and to cap it all has pledged all the prize money from this event to those hurt by the recent mass shooting in Vegas. A worthy cause.
Our second selection is definitely one from left field. Luke Donald used to be the World No. 1, but that was a few years ago and his last victory was in 2012. As a highly ranked player Donald tended not to play these lesser tournaments at the end of the year. However, times change and Donald is now fishing in shallower waters. We’ll take a punt at large odds.
Hoffman 0.5 pts each way at 33/1, 1/4 the odds for the first five places, Bet Victor
Donald 0.5 pts each way at 150/1, 1/4 the odds for the first five places, Stan James
