Saturday Races: Fly the Coop…

An array of great jump racing today as the season kicks into top gear.  Some very interesting clashes at Down Royal and Wetherby can help provide clues to the season ahead, but Ascot is the place to be for betting opportunity.

The 2m handicap chase (1425) throws up a very interesting bet.  Favourite Marracuja should go well but struggles to win, and last year’s winner Quite By Chance looks a better prospect even though 9lbs higher.

Both are beatable and we really like the look of Venetia Williams’ runner Calipto.  The stable goes very well at this track and this horse was a real Cheltenham Festival dark horse when defying a near 12 month absence on stable debut to run a fine 6th of 24 in the Grand Annual, staying on best of all.

A subsequent crashing Ayr fall is hopefully a distant memory, and the booking of the excellent Barry Cooper suggests the stable have high hopes. So do we.

An hour later (1535) sees a quality staying handicap chase.

Favourite Go Conquer is up 7lbs for an easy Fontwell win and should go well.

Emerging Force almost got the vote to build on a hugely promising novice campaign.  We have him earmarked for a big race run, but he may need this first run since Aintree.

We prefer the horses-for-courses appeal of last year’s winner Antony. He is only 4lbs higher here than when prevailing comfortably last year, and has the benefit of a Fontwell third to Go Conquer last month to secure full fitness.

He has plenty to find with the winner, but should improve massively for the run.  He can defend his title.

Calipto, (1425 Ascot), 2pts win, 6/1 generally available

Antony, (1535 Ascot), 1pt win, 9/1 generally available

Calipto & Antony, 0.5pts each way double, approx 69/1.
