Sunday Races: Mill to make journey pay

After all the drama of San Diego, the gaze of the racing world turns to……Carlisle.

The pretty Cumbrian track stages one of its leading jumps fixtures of the year with some decent prize money on offer albeit not quite the Breeders Cup!

The race that catches our interest is the staying handicap chase (1430).

Favourite Templeross represents the in form Twiston-Davies yard, but he was a beaten favourite on recent chasing debut and may need more experience for a race like this.

Beggars Cross won well last time but is now on a career high mark. He may be starting to progress and looks better value than the favourite.

However both look beatable, and we fancy Bindon Mill to do just that.

His recent seasonal debut was an excellent fourth at his local track Exeter in a big field of runners.

He has been quietly progressive and has been generously dropped a pound for that good run.  Trainer Victor Darnell has confined the horse’s twelve lifetime runs to relatively local tracks, seven at Exeter, so it looks significant that he makes the length-of-the-country journey all the way to Carlisle.

Nick Scholfield knows the horse well and he can land the Sunday spoils.

Recommendation: Bindon Mill (1430 Carlisle), 1pt win, 10/1 Stan James
