European Golf: Ross to beat his friends…

The European golfing tour heads south this week, with the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa hosting the Nedbank Challenge.

Swede Alex Noren is the defending champion at a course that is the third longest in European Tour history, measuring over 7800 yards. It is also a course where wind can be a factor.

Ball-striking and greens in regulation look to be the key considerations this week, and this season that has tended to point to Tommy Fleetwood. However, he has been playing practically every week in an attempt to win the Order of Merit, and looks tired. We’ll go elsewhere.

Ross Fisher is playing well, posting back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Alfred Dunhill Links and the Italian Open. He has finished second here in 2014, and can go one better this week.

Our second selection is another player who goes well when the wind blows. Chris Wood arrives relatively fresh after having returned to action last week in Turkey. He placed third here in 2015, and offers solid each way potential.

Recommendations:

Fisher to win, 1 pt, at 20/1, widely available

Wood 0.5 pts each way at 40/1, 1/4 the odds for first five places, Stan James
