Yet another one-from-two yesterday where it was evident that ground conditions are trending towards the typically seasonal soft.
That will be the case at Nottingham today as we hear the fat lady warming up for Doncaster’s flat season closer on Saturday.
Sprinting is the name of the game with a high class little field heading to post for the day’s best race (1415 GMT).
Gracious John won this last year beating Perfect Pastime and both reappear off the back of wins last time and both 7lbs lower than last year. They must go close.
However, on Perfect Pastime’s Doncaster win, wherever he finishes, veteran Hoof It should be very close by. He gets a 4lb pull for just over a length but also gets the assistance of Paul Mulrennan who knows him so well.
A winner on all going, he is a pound lower than when winning last year’s hugely competitive Stewards Cup, and 6lbs lower than when leading that same race this year until deep inside the final furlong on ground much like today’s. He can land one for the pensioners.
The following race (1450), sees numerous in form sprinters lining up looking to get one last strike out of the season.
Memories Galore brings two excellent recent seconds to the table, but has been edged up 3lbs for the privilege.
Quick Look is up 8lbs for a runaway 6l win at Catterick last week. There were several large margin winners that day possibly a function of conditions more than a measure of form, and it was a weaker race than this.
We prefer the claims of the lightly raced Jabbarockie whose win here last time was deeply impressive, being eased down late on when defeating a horse who has won his next two races. He is 5lb higher here, but we think that’s the best form on offer and has that added edge of course and distance familiarity. He could still be improving.
Hoof It, (1415 Nottingham), 1pt win, 10/1 Paddy Power
Jabbarockie, (1450 Nottingham), 1pt win, 13/2 generally available
Hoof It & Jabbarockie, 1pt win double, approx 80/1
