Premier League: Soton to win, De Bruyne to thrill…

The first Premier League game of a Sunday double header is a south coast derby, with Southampton visiting Bournemouth.

Both teams had reverses midweek, but Southampton will surely feel better about their battling late defeat at Manchester City than Bournemouth will given their insipid home defeat to Burnley.

And it is the visitors who have the best recent record in this tie. Bournemouth have only won one out of their last eight meetings with their neighbours, while all four of Southampton’s league wins here have been by the 3-1 score line.

We’ll take the visitors to win again, with both teams scoring.

The second game sees league leaders Manchester City hosting West Ham.

This game has home win written all over it. City are unbeaten in 27 matches in all competitions this season and are currently on a 12 match winning run in the league.

By contrast, the Hammers are without a win in their last seven league games. The head to head record doesn’t make for pleasant reading either – West Ham have won only three of the last 20 Premier League meetings, while last season City won the three games between the two sides with a 12-1 aggregate.

However, all this means that City are a very short price to win the game and all the goalscorer markets will react to that price.

So we at Lap of the Odds will take a punt that Belgian midfield star Kevin De Bruyne has his shooting boots on, and lashes one in from outside the box. Paddy Power have boosted the odds of this happening to 11/2 from 4/1.

Recommendations:

Southampton to win with both teams scoring, 1 pt, at 7/2, widely available

De Bruyne scores from outside the penalty area, 1 pt, at 11/2, Paddy Power
