It’s the final night of the group stage of this season’s Champions League, and three English teams are involved.
Both Tottenham and Manchester City have already qualified top of their respective groups, and are thus likely to field inexperienced teams while resting key players.
The major interest will focus on Anfield as Liverpool host Spartak Moscow. The Reds currently top the group and a win tonight would cement that position. However, a defeat would see Spartak climb above the Reds (given the draw in Moscow) and could see the hosts knocked out of the competition if Sevilla win.
Liverpool are unbeaten against Spartak in the Champions League in their three previous fixtures, winning 5-0 in their last encounter at Anfield. But that was in 2002.
Spartak have only won six of their past 40 Champions League games, and have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 15 matches in the competition.
This all suggests Liverpool’s high scoring forward line may have some joy tonight, but a question over the defence remains – midfielders were reinvented as defenders on the weekend!
That said, the 5/4 widely on offer for Liverpool to win with both teams scoring seems a little tight. Instead we’ll look at the goalscorer markets. Mohamed Salah has been a sensation this season, scoring for fun, but this is now largely priced in. Sadio Mane is being eased back into the side after injury, and so we’ll turn to Liverpool’s Brazilian magician.
Philippe Coutinho had his differences with the club at the start of the season but he hasn’t let this affect his form on the pitch. We’ll take the 8/1 that SkyBet offers that he scores a brace tonight.
Recommendations: Coutinho to score a brace of goals, 1 pt, at 8/1, SkyBet
