One of the US tour’s oddest events takes place this weekend. Formerly the Templeton, the QBE Shootout uses a pairs format and some radical playing terms.
The 54 hole dash starts with a texas scramble, has a hybrid foursomes on day 2, concluding with a fourball better ball day 3.
With two drives to choose from, and two approach shots, the emphasis looks likely to be on the green.
The pair with the highest world ranking is the inform duo of Brian Harman and Pat Perez.
We have had the frustration of backing Harman this year on a few occasions. He drives it long and putts superbly – if only he didn’t have to play the approach shots, where he ranks almost last on tour (158th).
Well this tournament format should suit as for the most part he can lean on the far superior approach play of partner Perez.
Both men are ace putters, and that is likely to be the decisive point on a course that had few teeth. We expect a birdie blitz,
Recommendation: Harman & Perez, 1pt win, 13/2 Stan James
