An interesting Sunday sees the return of last year’s Gold Cup winner and Ryanair chase winner.
Un de Sceaux is probably too short to support, but Sizing John looks more backable for Punchestown’s grade 1 John Durkan Chase.
After stepping up in trip, Sizing John ran up a sequence of wins in the big ones at both Cheltenham and Aintree. He was clearly the best staying chaser of last season even though laughably rated below Many Clouds – a decision that looks more and more ridiculous each week.
In winning here he held off Djakadam and that horse looks the only credible again this time. Djakadam has a fine record in this race and could well bounce back, but the vibes are for John, the younger horse carrying less accumulated baggage.
Over at Huntingdon It is the annual Peterborough Chase Day and this looks tailor made for the hardy trier Top Notch.
Much the best over hurdles, he continues to jump with speed and care, and having jumped to his right on chasing debut.
He was a tidy winner at Ascot last time in what was probably a better race than today.
Top Notch, (1430 Huntingdon) & Sizing John, (1405 Punchestow), 2pt win double, approx 3/1
