Sunday Races: Ex is on fire…

It’s the last chance saloon as the final opportunity arises to land a bet in 2017.

The fare at Lingfield, Uttoxeter and Warwick carries little appeal, and it’s the traditional New Year’s Eve fixture at Punchestown that offers the best prospect.

The 2m4f Hurdle (1340) features the short priced favourite Killultagh Vic returning after 23 months of training issues.

He was good enough pre-injury to win at the Cheltenham Festival and beat Thistlecrack in a grade 1 novice at Punchestown. On anything like that form he wins this easily.

The problem is the long injury break, and the decidedly patchy form of the powerhouse Mullins yard over Christmas.

At the other end of the scale, it is only 5 days since Ex Patriot was an easy winner at Limerick.

His fourth in the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival was the highlight of a consistent juvenile campaign and he has continued in similar form this season.

His form is just below top class, but we know he was in that form just this week. Killultagh Vic’s form is top class, but it was last seen in January 2016. At the odds we’re prepared to back the fit horse for the upset.

Recommendation: Ex Patriot, (1340 Punchestown), 1pt win, 4/1 Bet365
