Newbury rides to the rescue today with a nice little midweek card perfectly designed to bridge the quality gap between weekend cards.
The opening handicap hurdle catches our eye. Doitforthevillage looks a short priced favourite. He won his last race over fences and gets to step back here over hurdles the small matter of 26lbs well-in relative to chasing.
That is a massive discrepancy and theoretically this should be a penalty kick for the favourite, but these instances of supremely well in horses rarely live up to the billing and there may be chances elsewhere.
Leading the challenge could be the Henderson trained Percy Street. This horse was good enough for a minor placing in the Fred Winter and looked to have carried that form through until a creepily poor effort last time.
We are always kind enough to forgive one out of character poor effort – and that probably pays for Percy.
Before that he has looked a progressive sort and we’ll roll the dice that he can rediscover that form in conditions that should suit. The 5lb claim of boy wonder James Bowen means Percy runs off an effective rating of 110, which looks compelling given he ran 6th at the Festival off 124.
Recommendation: Percy Street (1320 Newbury, 1pt win, 5/1 generally available
