It’s Leicester, Southwell and Wetherby today, and you can be sure that when Leicester call the going on their hurdle track as heavy then they really mean it as that track can get very deep.
That may not suit everyone, but could be the catalyst for a return to form for one in the 2m handicap hurdle (1550).
Catchin Time is moving into veteran status as a 10yo, but he is a horse with a distinct historical pattern. He has 6 lifetime wins – 4 on heavy, 2 on soft – but notably all those wins have squeezed into the calendar between Dec 31 and Feb 16.
So today’s race has perfect ground and comes right in the historical calendar sweet spot. His form so far in two runs this season is pretty poor, but needing a few runs to get fit is part of his trait, and it has at least allowed his rating to slip back closer to a proven winning mark.
Useful claimer Charlie Hammond takes off a very valuable 7lbs and allows for a good effective racing weight. It’s a bit of a punt given his poor recent runs, but the history books suggest it’s a punt worth trying.
Recommendation: Catchin Time, (1550 Leicester), 1pt win, 8/1 generally available
