The PGA Tour heads to Arizona this week for the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, with Hideki Matsuyama seeking to win the event for the third time in a row.
The Japanese star has a formidable record around this course, aside from the two wins he has also finished in the top four on two other occasions. We at Lap of the Odds like the theory of horses for courses in golf, but at 10/1 think this is fully priced in with Matsuyama.
Jon Rahm will also have his backers, after all he’s won already this season and will be familiar with the conditions having gone to the University of Arizona. But he showed signs of fatigue in his final round last week, and we’ll pass.
Jordan Speith also has a solid record here but he may be looking to peak nearer to the Masters, Ricky Fowler missed the cut last week while Justin Thomas looked rusty in Hawaii earlier this month.
Instead we’ll look a little further down the betting list for our selection. Kevin Chappell finished strongly last week and has already won on the Tour, in similar conditions in Texas last year. At 60/1, we’ll have an each way punt.
Recommendation: Chappell 1 pt each way at 60/1, 1/5 the odds for the first six places, SkyBet
