Well we lost our nap to the cold spell yesterday, but will aim a fair bit further south today and hope for milder climes at lovely Ludlow. The sharp flat course tends to favour speed, and that could be interesting in the strong looking mares hurdle (1440).
Plenty of quality on display with recent winner War Creation looking likely to give them all a lead for the Nicky Henderson stable.
We prefer Fergal O’Brien’s Oscar Rose. Fergal has been going great guns this year from the shared space with ex-guvnor Nigel Twiston-Davies. In particular he has had good success with mares in recent years and seems to have a good grasp of the programme for mares.
This race looks a sound choice as a first chance to step this mare up in trip after lacking a finishing kick at 2 miles. She looked to have put hurdling issues behind her when cautiously ridden at Doncaster last time, staying on into a close 4th after being hampered at the halfway stage.
Jockey Paddy Brennan will be hoping that better jumping display will allow him to be a bit more tactically aggressive here. I still expect him to hold her up and come with a late run, but the extra time and distance here should play to the strengths of a daughter of Oscar by a Beneficial mare, and she can improve on her way to better things.
Recommendation: Oscar Rose, (1440 Ludlow), 1pt win, 4/1 generally available.
