Champions League: Sterling to benefit from Basel faulty defence…

The Champions League returns this week, and we’re now down to the knockout stages.

The English teams are well represented, with five through for the first time ever. Tonight sees Manchester City travel to Basel and Tottenham head to Turin to take on Juventus.

Manchester City are flying in domestic competitions, and dispatched Leicester with consummate ease on Saturday. Although Basel are not a bad side–they finished second to Manchester United in the group stage–they are probably the weakest team left in the competition.

Basel know they have to take a lead back to the Etihad, and this means they may be open to the counter from the talented City stars. Raheem Sterling has had an excellent season to date, and we’ll take the 17/2 on offer at bet365 that he scores a brace.

The other tie looks a lot more tightly matched, yet these two teams have never met competitively.

Tottenham have a tricky task tonight. Juventus are unbeaten in their last 22 Champions League home matches, a run going back to April 2013. That said, Spurs are playing well and have a strong defensive unit, while Juve will be missing star striker Paulo Dybala.

With this in mind, we’re going to plump for a goalless draw. But as BetFred is offering the same 15/2 for there being no goalscorer we will take that and keep own goals on our side.

Recommendations:

Basel v Man City:  Raheem Sterling to score 2 or more goals, 1pt win, 17/2 Bet365

Spurs v Juventus:  No goalscorer, 1pt, at 15/2, BetFred
