There can be little more romantic than the prospect of an afternoon racing at Musselburgh or Towcester (try selling that one to your better half).
Given the significant floral overheads that need to be met today, the pressure is on to find a nap winner.
We will head to the stamina sapping uphill mud-fest that is Towcester and the 2m5f chase (1610).
The favourite looks likely to be Spirit Of Hale, and rightly so. After just 12 career runs and only 3 over fences he looks on the upward curve. Two runs ago he started to hint at better to come when staying on from an unpromising position at Bangor. His close third at Catterick last time built on that, and that form is already working out well.
On this stiff course, the drop back to 2m5f should be ideal. He has looked a little one paced, but frankly maintaining one pace is pretty much the recipe for success around Towcester.
The opposition is headed by recent course winner How’s My Friend, but a 7lb rise for a 13yo chaser surely leaves him too much to do here in his dotage. Whilst both Badilou and Lickpenny Larry have hinted at promise but their basement handicap ratings tell a story of repeated failure to deliver.
Spirit Of Hale is the only one here with youth, form and progress on his side, and he should grind out a success. Let’s go for the extra large bouquet.
Recommendation: Spirit Of Hale, (1610 Towcester), 1pt win, 3/1 BetFred, Totesport, Betfair
