The PGA Tour stays in California this week, moving down from Pebble Beach to the Riviera County Club and the Genesis Open.
Former world no. 1 Tiger Woods tees it up this week, and this is the course on which he made his debut on the PGA Tour when just 16. Still, he has yet to win here, even in his pomp, so we’ll take a watching brief as he returns from injury.
The current world no. 1 is, of course, Dustin Johnson. DJ was our confident pick last week, and we were almost counting the cash before the weekend! He didn’t quite get it done, but still finished second.
Given his proven liking for this course–he’s the defending champion and has been runner up twice, all in the last four years–and his continuing good play, we think it still makes sense to have cash on him, even at a short price.
Our second selection is a bit of a punt. Charley Hoffman has been playing reasonably well this season, finishing in the top ten in the Hero World Challenge and the QBE Shootout. The San Diego native has form around this course, finishing tied fourth last year and in the top 30 in 2015.
There is a slight worry in that he pulled out of last week’s tournament in the third round, but at 100/1 we are getting a price to compensate.
Johnson to win, 1 pt at 5/1, Paddy
Hoffman 0.5 pts each way at 100/1, 1/4 the odds for the first five, bet365
