The Champions League continues tonight, with a couple more high profile games.
The game with English representation sees Chelsea host Barcelona The Blues are not in the best of form, they have won just four games of their past 12 in all competitions, but they do have a reasonable record against the Spanish giants. Chelsea are unbeaten in their last seven games against Barca in the Champions League.
However, that strong record was built on a rock solid defence, and that is not the current case. Chelsea conceded three against Bournemouth at home in late January and four against Watford in early February. Now comes Barca and the world’s best player. We think Chelsea will have difficulty stopping Lionel Messi from scoring tonight.
The second game sees German champion Bayern Munich take on their Turkish equivalent Besiktas.
Bayern are one of this competition’s ‘big guns’. They are bidding to reach the quarterfinals for the seventh year in a row and this is their 14th time in the last 16. Their opponents are in the knockout phase for the first time.
We have seen in some of last week’s games in this phase that the bigger teams like to put the tie to bed early by going for the jugular. We think Bayern will go for goals tonight, and that means Robert Lewandowski. We’ll take a punt on the Polish star scoring a brace.
Recommendation: Messi to score for Barcelona and Lewandowski to score a brace for Bayern as a double, 1 pt, around 9/2, Paddy Power
