Monday Nap: Zu is a Keeper…

A second consecutive winning nap yesterday when veteran Cousin Khee stormed home at Southwell.  Perhaps the low grade all-weather stuff turns out to be our niche !!

Well it’s back to the synthetics for today’s nap, albeit we are under jump rules as Kempton stages another of the emergency “jumpers’ bumpers” meetings.

The classiest event of the day sees the 140 rated hurdler Chesterfield, the 150 rated Josses Hill, the 135 rated junction Fourteen, 132 rate Vosne Romanee and 135 rated Zubayr clash over 2 miles (1530).

It is tempting to think Josses Hill should have this in the bag on those ratings, but this is to all intent an purposes a flat race, and he is unproven in that discipline on this surface.  He is the classiest of these, but at 10 years old he may not be quite as quick as he was in his youth and his presence here may just help to make a market.

We suspect this lies between Chesterfield and Zubayr.  We backed the latter at fancy prices for the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr last Spring, and having quickened clear he got chinned on the line by Chesterfield – and that hurt.

At these weights that should happen again – but on flat ratings it is Zubayr who has the fractional edge (90 to 86).  What’s more that rating is both more recent, having been earned in a run last August (as opposed to Oct 2013), and features three runs and one win on this course and synthetic track.

Add in the not inconsiderable 3lb claim of wonder woman Bryony Frost in the saddle and the Paul Nicholls gelding looks worth a good bet.

Recommendation:  Zubayr, (1530 Kempton), 1pt win,  9/4 generally available
