Cheltenham Wednesday Tips: 5/1 Bow to the Bumper King

The Daily Nap:

Blackbow5.30 Cheltenham, 3pts win, 5/1 generally available

Willie Mullins in the bumper has been a rule for nearly two decades now.  He comes mob-handed as usual, but Blackbow was an impressive winner of Ireland’s best bumper this season.  He looks a big chasing type, and not naturally a good ground Cheltenham bumper type, but the relentless rain is very much in his favour, and he should prove very hard to beat.

Wednesday Other Races:

Samcro1.30 Cheltenham, 1pt win, 8/11 generally available

The hype horse of the meeting? Or the next Arkle?  Samcro has looked imperious in a winning spree in Ireland.  Handles soft, seems to stay well, and looks like he has the race at his mercy.  The dream is likely to live on.

Presenting Percy,  2.10 Cheltenham, 1pt win, 5/2 generally available

This blog’s best friend from last year.  Has winning form on soft and at extreme distances, and has that valuable festival winning form.  Could be vulnerable in a slog to a hardy stayer like Monalee, but hopefully his class will see him through.

As You Were,  2.50 Cheltenham, 0.5pts each way, 25/1 Paddy Power (5 places)

Classy hurdlers near the top of the weights has been the formula, and we still like William Henry here.  That said, soft ground could bring some lightweights into the fray and As You Were has some interesting novice form and could just spring a surprise in the mud.  We’ll probably be backing them both.

Altior, 3.30 Cheltenham,  1pt win, 5/4 generally available

The outstanding racehorse of the last few years.  His comeback from health issues at Newbury was deeply impressive and he can hold off the assembled Mullins challengers.  A late injury scare helps the price, he will only be at the start if trainer Henderson is convinced he can bring his best.

Cause of Causes, 4.10 Cheltenham, 2pts win, 11/4 generally available

Defending champion Causes of Causes won by 9l last year and has mostly the same characters to beat in search of a 4th festival success.  Should win with stablemate Tiger Roll’s chances diminished by the mud.  Frenchman Urgent de Gregaine at 16/1 could be overpriced for those looking for a good priced mud-lark.

Look My Way4.50 Cheltenham, 1pt win, 12/1 generally available

Mitchouka is very interesting, but doubts about getting home up the hill are exacerbated on this ground.  Both Look My Way and Esprit de Somoza look  like these conditions could be ideal.  The heavy rain could leave conditions similar to those when Look My Way briefly pushed Apple’s Shakira off the bridle in January, which could be an outstanding effort, and he could represent the value.
