This is the blog we never thought we would write. After four straight winning naps the idea of risking the run on this blog’s most notorious troll seems ludicrous – and yet here we go.
At the 2017 Cheltenham Festival, one of our biggest bets was on progressive novice Singlefarmpayment. It looked inspired when he cruised through to take it up at the last. In fairness, he stayed on well and was unfortunate to get nailed on the line by repeat winner Un Temps Pour Tout.
Stung by a painful whisker defeat we followed in again on seasonal debut at this track only to get run out of it and finish second again. In again when he fell in the big handicap at Newbury, and one more time when ragged in defeat at Ascot.
That’s when we said never again. As such we were comfortable, and correct, in opposing him on heavy ground at this year’s festival when he was 5th behind Coo Star Sivola. But !!! that 5th was far better than we expected on such a surface.
Now he returns, dropped to the mark of that 2017 festival second, with drying ground for the first time since that seasonal debut second, against opposition weaker than any he has faced in over a year, and newly joined with champion jockey Richard Johnson.
Never say never again…
Recommendation: Singlefarmpayment, (1700 Cheltenham), 1pt win, 7/2 generally available
