The flat season is underway and it’s Monday – that means Pontefract and Windsor. We are typically cautious at Windsor, but Ponty is a great track for the old betting boots.
One feature of the Pontefract season is the series of marathon flat races, some of the longest in the racing calendar, and the first of which is run today over a daunting 2m6f (1540).
Madam Lilibet is a proven regular in these, but she has a near career high mark and fitness to prove.
We really like Uptown Funk. Trained by useful northern trainer Keith Dalgliesh, this 4yo son of the late great Galileo was gradually stepped up in trip on the flat, arguably running his best effort over 2 miles last time on the flat at Newcastle.
He looked a little unlucky when a last flight faller when staying on strongly to challenge in a 2m4f hurdle race in his last appearance at Musselburgh.
No hurdles to worry about here, and in a field of modest quality he stands out as the one runner with a depth of potential to progress. Jockey Phillip Makin is always a positive in the saddle.
Recommendation: Uptown Funk, (1540 Pontefract), 1pt win, 10/3 generally available
