There’s no sweetening the pill, yesterday’s picks had a day to forget. Still, it’s better to get all your winners at once, on which note….
The Daily Yankee:
NAP OF THE DAY: Smiley Bagel, (1400 Lingfield), 1pt win, 7/2 generally available
Has been a legend over these conditions this winter, with figures of 11232. It could be argued the handicapper is catching up with him, and he probably doesn’t have a ton in hand anymore, but his two seconds have been by a nose and a short head. He is closely matched with other leading contenders Attain and Widnes, but he showed when unlucky not to get up last time that he has more juice at this mark whilst the others look to be maxed out on the ratings. Pat Cosgrave is a reliable pilot and it can be Smiley’s day again.
Cristal Spirit, (1640 Redcar), 7/4: hails from a top yard and has an eye catching booking of top northern based jockey Danny Tudhope. Benefitted from big step up in trip on handicap debut, as his breeding would suggest, when runner up at Yarmouth. This looks a weaker race, and he should improve for that run.
Vallarta, (1740 Musselburgh), 4/1: This veteran handicapper tries 5f for the first time in nearly 3 years, but he has always shown speed, won over Catterick’s sharp 6f this time last year and gets in here 11lbs lower than that winning mark. The stable are just starting to show some form and their runners could be very well in after a period in the doldrums.
Chiefofchiefs, (1920 Chelmsford), 11/4: Has a win on this surface to his name last year and was well supported to win on his reappears recently in a big field at Newmarket, Onky managed 5th then but ran with bags of promise. This is s similarly tough looking race, but he should be spot on now, and this is his time of year.
