Stage 14 of the Giro D’italia and the GC fight is about to get blown apart on the infamous Monte Zoncolan.
4 Categorised climbs await prior to the mouth watering finale and it will be interesting to see how the main teams approach the day with the breakaway yet to stay away throughout the grand tour.
Adam Yates has been nothing short of a revelation but it remains to be seen if he can maintain his blistering form which has seen him yield 2 stage wins and a healthy lead at the top of the standings.
He is a worthy favourite for todays stage but is plenty short enough all things considered. The peloton have yet to tackle anything approaching the beast which lies in wait today. 1730 climbing metres over 10 kilometres with the gradients topping out at 22% are a typical gruelling Giro test.
There will be no hiding place and domestiques will be shelled out early having been softened up by what has gone before.
This will lead to a captivating fight between the main protagonists.
Tom Dumoulin will time trial his way up but whether that is enough to claim victory is questionable. Domenico Pozzovivo has failed to translate his fantastic climbing skills into victories and his lack of a decisive kick may yet again prove costly.
So we turn to Frenchman Thibaut Pinot as our selection to take a famous victory. The FDJ team leader has been quietly impressive as he sits in 3rd place overall. He lies only a minute off the lead and knows he will need to put time into Dumoulin prior to the time trial on Tuesday.
He has shown imperious form in the Alps and this type of uber difficult test is exactly what he excels at. He looks a superb bet at 10/1 to land the spoils.
As ever there is a danger that the breakaway is given licence to fight it out and if that is the case Ben Hermans is just the type to relish what lies ahead on what looks sure to be a pivotal test of all the would be winners credentials.
