Monday Yankee: Take it to the Max…

The Daily Yankee:

NAP OF THE DAY:  Erissimus Maximus, (1605 Redcar), 1pt win, 9/2 generally available

Chris Dwyer’s 4yo was a multiple winner last year but a slow starter on the all weather this Spring.  With champion De Sousa in the saddle he ran much better last time when a good 3rd at Newmarket.  The first four finished clear that day, winner Major Jumbo nearly followed up in a hot race at York, second Move in Time hacked up on the weekend, as did 4th home George Bowen at York.  Finishing 3rd clearly looks a mighty run in retrospect, and off the same mark and with De Sousa still in the plate he must have a big chance in a hot race.

Uptown Funk, (1515 Carlisle), 4/1:  a lack of obvious pacesetter makes this staying handicap a bit trappy.  It may not suit hold up horse Question Of Faith or thorough stayer Becky Thatcher, but it could help the consistent Uptown Funk.  He was outstayed by Becky over a much longer trip at Ponty, but travelled well to this distance.  He couldn’t reel in the leaders at pace-favouring Ripon last time but still ran pretty well.  He looks the most tactically versatile here and is favoured over the all-weather specialists that head the market.

Placebo Effect, (1645 Carlisle), 11/2:  was a busy 2yo but landed three handicaps and was right up to that form on seasonal debut when a close third after a less than smooth run at Beverley.  He’s entitled to improve for that run and looks the one in here with the winning habit.  Favourite Weellan appeals after a switch to top trainer O’Meara, but 9 places in 10 runs without winning suggests a vulnerability.

Boko Fittleworth (1735 Windsor), 3/1: 10f and 12f 3yo handicaps are prime hunting grounds for lightly raced improvers and this is no exception.  Safeness and So Near So Farhh fit the bill, but Boko Fittleworth looks the one.  Added to his ability to improve is the switch to the yard of Ben Pauling who does so well with new recruits.  He could be a big gamble for this so get the early price.
