A bit of a catch-up on recent results, we will be back to a monthly results publication going forward.
The basis for Pool Return is discussed in the Our Results page of the site, where previous months’ results can be accessed.
Horse Racing has been our strong performer across these months, returning +32, 0, and +29 per month. The March highlight was our annual highlight, The Cheltenham Festival. We made over 40pts of profit there – indicating how the rest of March and April were pretty much a wash. Indeed a 3pt winning nap on Blow By Blow (14/1) and a 3pt winning nap on Coo Star Sivola (11/2) should have resulted in much more and this feels more like big win squandered than a small win hard earned May, however, has been much kinder with a great 3pt winning nap in Magic Circle (8/1) and 2pt nap in Silver Streak (8/1) being the highlights to a solid month returning 29pts of profit.
Our Yankee strategy initiated in February, and run separately to the main pool results above, continued to struggle through the Spring, having lost 11pts in Feb it followed with further losses of 17 and 18 pts respectively in March and April. It was very much on probation heading into May with the hope that better ground and flat racing may provoke a change of luck. A 63pt profit in May repaid that faith, with three big wins courtesy of 3 from 4 outcomes, we head into June still waiting on a yankee full house but with an aggregated profit of 17pts now since inception.
Football was a struggle through the Spring having been a star for us through the midwinter. We weren’t able to nail down a profitable angle through the closing weeks of the season, registering small losses in each month of -5,-14 and -7 respectively, a total of -26 which, whilst still leaving us up on the calendar year after an excellent Jan and Feb, was still disappointing. The World Cup should be a good opportunity to turn the ship around as players and teams less familiar to the bookies can reward diligent research.
Golf was by far our star performer last season, but we have had a Danny Willett-like reaction to our major success, hardly finding a fairway (metaphorically) with this season’s tips. Losses in March of 11pts and April of 12pts were thankfully partially offset by the 22/1 success of Francesco Molinari in May, leading to a claw-back of 12pts in that month. Golf needs to be assessed over a number of months as there are relatively few tips per month, and the midsummer was rich hunting grounds for us last year, so bring it on.
Other sports lost 11pts over the 3 months, primarily some near misses, but not quite good enough in the Giro D’Italia cycling. The Tour de France was kind to us last year and we will write off our Giro losses as R&D in advance of the 2018 Tour.
All told, more aggregate success. April was our first losing month since October 17 which speaks to some consistency, and it was a relief to see the Yankee strategy come good as part of a strong May. Still plenty to work on to get better.
Thanks as always for messages of support, and please stay tuned.
