World Cup: Killer Kylian…

The final World Cup group to study is Group C, in which the top seeded team is France.

It’s difficult to make a judgment on the French. They have talent in abundance in all areas of the pitch, but this group of players always seems to come up short. They lost to Germany in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in 2014 and couldn’t handle the pressure in the final of the European Championships at home against Portugal two years later.

They could do anything in this World Cup – win it or crash out early – and we wouldn’t be surprised.

With this in mind, we’re not going to advise a bet involving the length of France’s stay in Russia. Instead we’re going to take a punt on their leading goal scorer.

The rest of the group includes tricky games against Denmark and Peru, and an easier one against Australia.

Antoine Griezmann is the favourite to score the most goals for the French, and it’s easy to see why. He has scored 20 goals in 54 games for his national side, including claiming the Golden Boot as top scorer in Euro 2016. However, a price of around evens doesn’t inspire.

With defenders likely to be watching Griezmann very carefully, we’re going to take a punt on a young player whose looks like he has the world at his feet.

Kylian Mbappe only made his debut for France in March 2017 having joined PSG from Monaco, initially on loan, and then permanently for a reported fee of 180 million euros. He has scored four times for France in just 15 appearances, including his country’s only goal last time out, and we think this could be his stage.

Recommendation: Mbappe to be leading scorer for France, 1 pt, at 6/1, William Hill
