We’re going to take a punt on a group of goal scorers in today’s three World Cup matches.
First off, to Group E where Costa Rica face Serbia. With Brazil and Switzerland lying in wait in this group, both sides will be very keen for a win.
The Central Americans were one of the stars of the last World Cup but their team looks a little aged now. We look to the Serbian side to take the initiative, and in Aleksandar Mitrovic they have a striker in form.
He played very well for Fulham last season and scored a hat-trick against Bolivia over the weekend. There are doubts about his ability at the highest level, but we’ll take a chance that he scores today.
The second game sees the World Cup holders Germany enter the tournament with a Group F match against Mexico.
The Germans haven’t played well since the qualifying matches, winning just one of their last six friendlies. But this is now the real thing.
Mexico are a talented side, and will cause problems, but we still expect Germany to produce when it matters. We have a high opinion of German striker Timo Werner and expect him to start the campaign with a goal.
Finally, for today, we return to Group E for the introduction of the samba kings Brazil and their opponents Switzerland.
Brazil are our tip to win the tournament (see here) and thus we expect them to start with a win. It won’t be easy though, as Switzerland will be compact and work hard, but the attacking talent Brazil has at its disposal is frightening.
We think Gabriel Jesus will start up front, ahead of Roberto Firmino, but given the uncertainty we’ll side with Neymar to score today. He has seemingly recovered from a fractured foot and has scored in his last two matches.
Recommendation: Mitrovic to score anytime for Serbia, Werner to score anytime for Germany and Neymar to score anytime for Brazil as a treble, 1 pt, at approximately 9/1, Paddy Power
