It’s Group C which is in focus this afternoon in the World Cup, and that means France versus Denmark and Australia taking on Peru.
The French have won both of their group games so far and are already through to the knockout stages, but haven’t looked impressive in the process.
In a team that holds so much impressive attacking talent it may be the more workmanlike qualities of Olivier Giroud that comes to the fore. Giroud has scored France’s last three goals against the Danes, including a brace the last time they played.
We don’t think there will be many goals in this game, but Denmark need to win so space could open up for Giroud to profit. We’ll take him to be the first goal scorer.
Turning to Australia’s clash with Peru, we’re going to stick to a winning formula.
Mile Jedinak has been Australia’s best player this tournament, and his country needs another towering midfield performance. Along with a powerful shot, Jedinak has been successful twice from the penalty spot. We’ll take a punt that he gets on the score sheet once more.
The evening games are from Group D. Croatia have already qualified and now take on Iceland, while Argentina are scraping for their tournament life against Nigeria.
One thing has become clear during Argentina’s first two games, as impressive as their forward line is the midfield and defence are not up to the standards required at this level.
Now Messi, Aguero et al may score enough to win this game (and they may not!) but they’ll be chances at the other end. Ahmed Mussa looks electric in Nigeria’s win over Iceland, scoring twice, and we think he’ll cause Argentina’s back line plenty of problems tonight.
Given the tricky forwards in play in this game, and the way VAR is being utilised, we also like the 2/1 Paddy Power offers for a penalty to be awarded.
Croatia have looked very good so far, but we’re uncertain what team they will put out tonight. Their first choice side would probably be too strong for Iceland, but they may well make changes.
With Iceland needing to win and set pieces being their main source of goals, we are going to take another punt on an Icelandic defender scoring. We’ll try Hordur Magnusson at 22/1.
