World Cup: Werner to fire Germany to victory

Germany are back in the tournament by the skin of their teeth, and now they need to beat South Korea to make sure of progressing into the knockout phase.

We think that late Toni Kroos goal to beat Sweden may be the spark which ignites this German side. The Koreans have been disappointing and we think Germany could score quite a few.

We are fans of Timo Werner, although this has been stretched over the last two games, and we’ll take him to open his account today, with a brace.

The other game in Group F sees Mexico take on Sweden. The Swedes will have been crushed by the late German winner in their last game, and it would take a lot to rebound and beat a Mexican side which has been playing well.

That said, the Mexicans only need a point to progress and are unlikely to take too many chances. The draw bet pays just over 2/1. As we don’t think there will be many goals, we’re going to split our bets between 1-1 and 0-0.

Today’s evening games come from Group E, with the standout being Brazil’s clash with Serbia.

Brazil left it very late to beat Costa Rica last time out and now face a well organised Serbia team. Brazil are expected to win but we’ve been impressed with Serbia and in particular the protection Nemanja Matic has afforded his defence.

So we’re unsure about the winner, but we’re confident that Serbian defender Aleksandar Kolarov will adopt a shoot on sight policy given his free kick screamer in his first game. We’ll take him to score anytime.

The final game sees Switzerland take on Costa Rica. The Swiss need to win and should do against their weak opponents.

One of the features of the second round of group games has been the number of penalties awarded, with VAR a continuous presence.

We’ll hope that another penalty is awarded at this game, and take a punt on the Swiss regular spot expert Ricardo Rodriguez nets.
