World Cup: France to edge through

This is where the World Cup gets serious, the knockout stages. And today’s first game is a corker – France versus Argentina.

Both teams have impressive attacking talent, who have stuttered so far, but it’s France’s defensive strength which has enabled it to qualify with ease top of their group. Argentina, by contrast, required a late Marcos Rojo in their last game to save themselves from elimination.

Although it’s dangerous to rule out Messi, Aguero, Hinguin et al, it’s this French defensive stability, in direct contrast to their opponents, which means we lean towards Les Bleus. We’ll take France to win with both teams scoring.

Today’s second game sees Uruguay take on Portugal. This is sure to be a tight game with both teams renowned for their defensive play despite truly talented forwards.

We think this game could easily go to extra time and then penalties, while both sides are not known for their grace under pressure. With Uruguay’s Atletico Madrid defenders taking on Portugal’s Real Madrid star, Ronaldo, any tensions from the league season could be carried over to tonight’s game. With this in mind, we’ll bank on a red card tonight.

France/Argentina: France to win with both teams scoring, 1 pt, at 5/1, widely available

Uruguay/Portugal: A red card to be shown, 1 pt, at 18/5, Unibet
