The knockout phase of the World Cup started with a bang yesterday, with France winning a thriller, to the benefit of our subscribers, and Uruguay hanging on.
Today we start with a game between Spain and Russia. The hosts started their campaign with two impressive wins, but were outclassed by Uruguay last time out. We think something similar could happen today, with Spain winning with relative ease.
We think it’d likely that Spain will have the vast majority of possession and as a result the winning to nil bet does appeal. However, that’s not much of a price. We also don’t think the Spanish will want to run up the score against the hosts so we’ll go for a 2-0 score.
The second game sees Croatia take on Denmark. Croatia have been excellent so far, winning all three of their group games including hammering Argentina 3-0.
They seem to have goals coming from all angles and we expect them to triumph over a Danish side which qualified second in France’s group.
Although the Croatians have managed to spread their goals around, their star has been Real Madrid’s midfielder Luka Modric. Not only had he scored twice, but he has been the fulcrum around which the team has operated. We look for him to be effective once more, and take the 5/1 on offer that he is named the official FIFA man of the match.
Another bet that springs to mind is Paddy Power’s offer of 5/2 that both Spain and Croatia win in 90 minutes. However, the offer is limited to bets of £20 maximum.
Spain/Russia: Spain to win 2-0, 1 pt, at 7/1, bet365
Croatia/Denmark: Modric named man of the match, 1 pt, at 5/1, SkyBet
