Cycling: Bardet to go All the Way

The Tour De France takes centre stage for the Month of July and we believe it will be one of the most competitive of recent times.

Chris Froome heads the betting as he looks to follow up his Giro D’Italia victory with an unheralded double. With the Sky squad as strong as ever he is a worthy favourite.

However history is stacked against the Kenyan born Brit; as only seven have completed the feat and none in the past 30 years. Whether he can buck this trend amid the controversy of “Inhalergate” time will tell but we believe he has created value in the outright market.

One man who has steadily improved over the past few years and has the experience to pose a huge threat is Frenchman Romain Bardet. Having finished 2nd in 2016 and 3rd last year Bardet believes he is stronger than ever and ready to challenge. Experience of the tour and its demands is of significant importance and Bardet lines up for his 6th Tour as a tasty 18/1 shot.

He seems hugely overpriced and given his form and targeting of this race, he must be backed to at least replicate his performance over the past two years.

Each way terms are tight, but you can find 12/1 in the betting without Froome market and this is the best value for the hedge.

Elsewhere the King of the Mountains Jersey is extremely hard to predict given the variables that dictate tactics and GC interests. We may touch on this market after the first few days when we know the lay of the land.

However the Green Jersey interests us with favourite Peter Sagan trading at 1/3 in places. He is a strong favourite but one man who will be challenging him on all of the sprint finishes will be Fernando Gaviria. The Colombian has Grand Tour form having claimed four stage wins in last years Giro. Fully recovered from a bad knee injury he must have a real chance of claiming numerous stages.

Given the 24 year old has improved year on year 7/2 looks a big price.

Stay tuned for our stage betting guide as the Tour 2018 looks set to reward!
