The excitement in the World Cup continues Friday with the start of the quarterfinals.
First up, France take on Uruguay. The French looked excellent going forward in scoring four against Argentina last time out with Kylian Mbappe the standout performer.
Subscribers to this blog know how keen we are on Mbappe (World Cup: Killer Kylian…), but Uruguay are not as defensively weak as Argentina.
We still think France will win, but with low goal expectations we prefer to take the 9/2 on Antoine Griezmann to be the first goalscorer as he takes penalties and free kicks rather than a similar price on Mbappe.
The evening game sees Brazil take on Belgium. This could be a cracking game – Belgium came from two goals down to beat Japan in injury time last time out, while Brazil dismissed Mexico fairly easily.
The South Americans have an array of attacking talent at their disposal, and have also looked very solid defensively. We have been keen on them from the start (World Cup: Brazil to celebrate this time…) and make them slight favourites to defeat a Belgian side also full of ability but who looked shaky against the Japanese.
That said, we think the bookies are pricing the Brazilians as too strong favourites in this game, and the value has to be with Belgium to win in 90 minutes.
France/Uruguay: Griezmann to be first goalscorer, 1 pt, at 9/2, widely available
Brazil/Belgium: Belgium to win in 90 minutes, 1 pt, at 11/4, BetFred
