The PGA Tour rolls in to Akron, Ohio this week for the WGC-Bridgestone International, held for possibly the last time at the Firestone Country Club.
This tournament is one of Tiger Woods’ favourites, with the former world no. 1 having won eight times. He returns to the field after climbing back into the top 50 in the world rankings, and is sure to generate a lot of support. However, he’s still not the player he was, unsurprisingly, and we took note of how he collapsed in the Open having at one point taken the lead on the Sunday. His odds of around 12/1 are not for us.
Dustin Johnson is the favourite for this event, having shown his form with victory in the Canadian Open on the weekend. He won here in 2016 and could go well this week, but a price of 7/1 is not dissimilar to what he was offered up at last week, and this is a much tougher event.
Instead we’re going to side with Rory McIlroy. We were impressed with his play at the Open in dry, fast conditions we’re convinced are not his preferred. Yet he still finished joint second. There has been some rain at Firestone and this is much more like it for Rory, on a course he has already won on.
Our second option is Justin Thomas. JT hasn’t been at the top of his game of late, and he doesn’t have the best record around this course, but this means we can get a nice price of 22/1. And that’s for the world no. 3.
McIlroy to win, 1 pt, at 12/1, Unibet
Thomas to win, 1 pt, at 22/1, Unibet
