NAP OF THE DAY: Buonarroti, (1720 Ayr), 2pts win, 3/1 generally available
An old friend of ours, Buonarroti has only two UK flat wins in 37 attempts. But they were both at Ayr, one on heavy and one on soft, making him unbeaten in those course conditions. He has laboured on a faster surface this Summer hinting at a return to form last time. That’s allowed his rating to slip to 68 making him eligible here, and he was jocked up from the initial entry showing intent. Must have a huge chance in conditions he will relish.
Queen’s Sargent, (1400 Ayr), 4/1: has two lifetime best efforts on softer ground at the end of last year and picked up with a heavy ground win in the Spring. Now 7lbs lower after some much poorer fast ground runs since, but we can forgive those now the mud is back.
Rubenesque, (1620 Pontefract), 4/1: a high class Ponty stayers event where despite the presence of blog favourites Becky The Thatcher and So Near So Farrh, the key form looks like the York handicap where Angel Gabriel pipped Rubenesque for runner up. On weights it should be close, but Rubenesque looks the sort of hardy mare who may give more on a stiff track here than at pacy York. Worth backing.
Rasheeq, (1645 Ayr), 5/1: we made the compelling case for this longstanding turf maiden last time at Carlisle when this soft ground lover had seen fast ground racing reduce his rating by a stone from its peak and the ground had come soft for him again. He duly bombed out. That may be worth forgiving once, the logic holds true, and he drops further in weights and class.
