The PGA Tour heads west this week, with the Safeway Open held at the Silverado Resort and Spa in the Napa Valley, California.
This tournament represents the start of the new golfing season in the US, but many of the top names are missing as they recover from the exertions of the Ryder Cup.
One of the facts we’ve realised doing this blog is that players tend to have a preference for either the East or the West coast. The grasses on the greens tend to be different, and players react to this.
The defending champion is Brendan Steele, a native of Idyllwild, California. Steele has won three tournaments on the PGA Tour, and two of these have been here, in 2016 and last year. Now, we know it’s not easy to defend a title once, never mind twice, but at least we know he likes the course!
Our second selection is the favourite, Patrick Cantlay. Another native of California, Cantlay is the sort of fairways-and-greens golfer that, with hindsight, the Americans could have used in Paris last week. He’s of sufficient class that majors may not be far away, and deserves to be top of the betting in this field.
Cantlay to win, 1 pt, at 12/1, widely available
Steele 0.5 pts each way at 40/1, 1/5 the odds for the first seven places, Coral
