It’s the Premier League match of the season so far this afternoon, as second placed Liverpool host leaders Manchester City.
Both teams are undefeated in the league and head into the game with similar records, only goal difference separating them.
This was a spectacular game last season, with Liverpool winning 4-3, but City still ran away with the league. And while the hosts have bought well in the off season, and probably closed the gap between the two sides, there still remains a gap.
Liverpool’s famed front three are not showing the form of last year, but the team looks defensively more secure.
Manchester City have appeared to coast in many games, seemingly looking for a more serious challenge. This is probably it. We think there’s a chance City will press accelerate, and try to avenge last year’s loss (which stopped the possibility of an undefeated season).
Sergio Aguero has an excellent record against Liverpool, but it’s in midfield where the game will be won. And we take Spanish maestro David Silva to weave his magic while winning the man of the match award.
The earlier televised game sees Chelsea travel to Southampton.
The Blues have been playing very well of late, drawing an entertaining game against Liverpool last time out in the league. They will welcome back a lot of their stars after the European game midweek, and this probably spells bad news for the home team who have lost their last six against today’s opponents.
Midfielder Eden Hazard has been in sparkling form, with the Belgian star having already netted six times in the league – as many as the entire Southampton side. And we expect him to be the dominant player on the field today.
The third game of the day is the London derby between Fulham and Arsenal.
One of the interesting facts about this fixture is that it has produced four red cards (two each) in its last four iterations, yet you can get 11/2 for a sending off today.
Still, we’ll leave alone as we don’t see the venom in the clash. Instead, we note that Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has scored nine goals in his last 10 league games at Craven Cottage.
Now it’s true Arsenal’s defensive record has improved of late – they are trying for their third consecutive clean sheet – but it’s still a work in progress. We’ll take Mitrovic to score at anytime today, and if he does then the other bets basically work for free!
