European Golf: Gouveia to survive Spanish Inquisition

The European Tour seeks the sun this week, heading to Spain for the Andalucia Masters.

The Real Club Valderrama near Sotogrande hosts the event, and there is an outstanding favourite at this relatively short but tree-lined course – Sergio Garcia.

Garcia, the defending champion, has 12 top-10 finishes, including two wins, in 13 starts here. Simply a superb record. However, his odds reflect this with the Spaniard quoted as short as 4/1. We won’t put anyone off him, but he’s too short for us.

Instead we’re going to look further down the betting list.

Ricardo Gouveia is a Portuguese golfer of some promise. He first came to prominence in this event last year when fighting for his playing rights he played very well for the first three rounds. He subsequently fell back to finish just outside the top 20 as the pressure mounted.

This time, however, he comes off a top 10 finish at Walton Heath last week as well as 7th at the Portugal Masters. His playing card is assured this time around, and we look for him to impress.

Our next selection requires something of a leap of faith. Veteran Peter Hanson has missed four cuts from his last five tournaments, so form is hardly on his side! However, he came into this tournament last year in a similar slump and finished 12th. This course requires knowing, and we think Hanson can outplay his hefty odds.

Recommendations:

Gouveia 0.5 pts each way at 70/1, 1/5 the odds for the first six places, Unibet

Hanson 0.5 pts each way at 125/1, 1/5 the odds for the first seven places, SkyBet
