This week sees the fourth of the WGC events, this time it’s the HSBC Champions variety from the Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, China.
With the exception of Russell Knox in 2015, the last five winners of this tournament have all had length off the tee. And this is where we’ll look for this week’s champion.
Defending champion is Justin Rose, who profited from a late collapse from the then world no. 1 Dustin Johnson (who we had tipped with a 2 point selection ….).
DJ has an excellent record around this course, winning in 2013, on top of fifth and second placed in four attempts. That said, he has barely played since the Ryder Cup and looked distracted then. We respect his chances but will skip.
Rory McIlroy also has an outstanding record here, with five top six places in six attempts and the other position was 11th! He too has basically taken a month off, and although he does tend to play well fresh we’ll sidestep.
Instead we’ll side with the new world no. 1, Brooks Koepka. Fresh off a win last week, the US star won two of the year’s four majors. He hits the ball a mile and we think this course will suit.
Our second selection is one of the stars of the European Tour this year, Matt Wallace. Winner of three tournaments this season, Wallace was very unlucky to miss the Ryder Cup. He will now be keen to test himself on this global stage.
Koepka to win, 1 pt, at 8/1, widely available
Wallace 0.5 pts each way at 90/1, 1/4 the odds for the first five places, Unibet
