NAP OF THE DAY: Cock A Doodle Doo, (1625 Ludlow), 1pt win, 4/1 generally available
This mare won a Sligo maiden in August for her previous trainer. Has been picked up by the excellent Skelton yard and comes here for stable debut fresh from a wind operation. She needs to improve, but there are enough reasons to think she will. Looks to have been well placed to find a test of speed and Bridget Andrews is reliable up top.
On Raglan Road, (1420 Southwell), 4/1: there was some expectation around this fella when he debuted for Willie Mullins in a Fairyhouse festival bumper. Bred along similar lines to Douvan, but the likeness stopped there and he was quickly shipped out for pastures new. Has led on two creditable novice hurdle defeats for Charlie Longsdon, and now makes a chasing debut. Has got two Irish point to point runs to his name so has more experience than at first look. Could make all here and give us a glimpse of what might have been.
Minella Fiveo, (1600 Southwell), 7/2: not overly raced for a 10yo veteran. He ran a blinder when second to the potentially very well handicapped Zabeel Star at Carlisle last week, for this young jockey, beating the other 10 runners easily. It was a similar story on his only previous course and distance run last year when beating 14 rivals only to run into a winner in the middle of a 5 race winning run. Can go one better under a generous 10lb claim.
Zabeel Star, (1610 Carlisle), 1/1: it follows that if Minella Fiveo goes well then his conqueror, Zabeel Star, should go well over the same conditions as last week’s easy success and off the same weight. Is rated around the same on the flat as hurdles, which given there is usually around a 40lb difference for most horses, confirms he should still have plenty in hand.
