NAP OF THE DAY: Madeleine Bond, (1400 Newmarket), 1pt win, 14/1 generally available
The ground looked pretty ugly at Newmarket yesterday and it may be worth looking closely for horses that enjoy the muck. Madeleine Bond saunteeed home in a soft ground Chepstow maiden last year, and after a recent season opener on good to soft she has been toiling on quick ground and synthetics. She is consequently 5lbs lower, and after a fair effort from the front at Windsor last time on good to soft, she can come good again now back on testing going. Looks highly overpriced.
Magic Dancer, (1500 Ascot), 9/2: on the same mark as when a staying on second at Cheltenham last week (the winner there won again yesterday). Only 4lbs higher than winning a 15 runner Cheltenham handicap at the end of last year, and has Ascot form as well. Looks much more reliable than Global Citizen (yet to try this elevated rating), Simply The Betts (yet to try this grade) or Divin Bere (yet to prove he is back to his best)
Go Conquer, (1535 Ascot), 7/2: won this easing down off a 5lb lower mark last year. Lost his way after that, but has moved a few miles across the Cotswolds to the Twiston-Davies yard. That’s a stable that always hits the ground running in the Autumn, with a horse who has Autumn form and course and distance form. It adds up to a bet.
London, (1615 Newmarket), 10/1: we are huge fans of Presidential but are not sure he deserves to be favourite here. Instead it may be worth risking London. His only turf win came on heavy, and it was good to soft when he was a fair third in this race last year. Now nearly a stone lower, he comes fresh from his best run since and has Nicola Currie’s invaluable 3lb claim.
