NAP OF THE DAY: Ready And Able, (1455 Newbury), 1pt win, 7/4 generally available
Jonjo O’Neill’s hurdler completed a hat trick of wins in easy fashion last week at Aintree. He is unpenalised for that making him effectively 9lbs well in. He also gets Jonjo Jr’s useful 5lb claim. This is a better class of race with useful opposition like Moon Racer, but the maths of being an aggregate of nearly a stone well in, whilst proven to be fit and in form, is simply too conpelling.
Garrettstown, (1315 Newbury), 11/4: a very interesting novice hurdle with several promising prospects in opposition. It is early season and it may just be worth backing the extra maturity of the 5yos against the 4yoa whininky months ago would have been classed as juveniles. Garrettstown makes particular appeal having won a bumper well on his only start for his promising stable. Booking Richard Johnson reads like a statement of intent.
Duhallow Gesture, (1425 Newbury), 4/1: the penalised pair of Sula Island and favourite Posh Trish have a job on conceding 5lbs to some useful hurdling newcomers. Posh Trish was 10th in the UK’s leading mares bumper at Aintree last year – Duhallow Gesture was 3rd in that same race and now receives 5lbs. Trainer Anthony Honeyball has a small but select yard and it may be significant that he is starting her off in a decent race here rather than a penalty kick win at a gaff track.
Kapcourse, (1530 Newbury), 5/2: a very lightly raced chaser he won on fences debut in the spring in eye catching fashion. He is a healthy 12lbs higher but has potential to be much better again. The Nicholls runners rarely want for fitness on seasonal debut and he could just be too young, too sharp, and too talented for a mixed bunch of exposed opposition. Can be capable of better things as the season progresses.
